I.S.P.A.-Engineering, Sony make HD OB van for Mariinsky Theater

Location: St. Petersburg
Completion date: 03.12.2007

Unprecedented in scope and technical solutions, this project has enabled the world renowned opera and ballet company to capture and broadcast performances with a 16-18 (22-26) camera OB studio as is tours the world.

The project was conceived by the Mariinsky’s artistic and general director Maestro Valery Gergiev, who, through the years of service to the theater, has been strongly committed to the idea of turning it into the world’s best opera and ballet company provided with a state-of-the-art live broadcast infrastructure. Given the Mariinsky’s daring plans and intensive tours, as well as enormous interest in Gergiev’s talent in Russia and abroad, the Mariinsky management proposed a plan to acquire a modern mobile TV complex as part of its ambition strategy to reach broad audiences and to capture and broadcast productions from various sites in a full HD format.

I.S.P.A.-Engineering and Sony experts combined efforts to produce the optimal and complex solution.

I.S.P.A.-Engineering acted as the general contractor. In cooperation with the Mariinsky it drew up a feasibility study, structured the sound content, provided the managerial backing, including logistics and financial management, and coordinated interaction between other manufacturers. Finally, together with Gergiev and Sony, the optimal design and interior were selected for the main OB van, and characteristics chosen for the auxiliary vehicle. Sony did the project planning, made the bodies, assembled and installed the equipment and did the final tuning.

The bulk of the work was done in Britain, and best I.S.P.A. and Sony engineers held a series of consultations at Sony’s facility in Basingstoke. All acceptance tests are over now and the OB complex is to be handed to the Mariinsky in December 2007.
